Mitigate Migraines Naturally With Chiropractic Care

woman holding head with painOften defined as a severe headache that causes throbbing, pulsing head pain on one side of your head, a migraine can be more than painful; it can be debilitating. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, it is the eighth most disabling disease in the world. It is estimated that 38 million people (or 1 in every 10) in the United States alone suffer from migraine headaches.

In addition to intense throbbing pain, migraine symptoms can include nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances known as auras. Migraines can disrupt daily activities and last from a few hours to several days.

What Causes Them?

Doctors don’t know the exact causes of migraines, but research does indicate that there are certain triggers that can initiate an attack. Some of the more common migraine triggers include:

  • Foods – Processed foods, salty foods, aged cheeses, and chocolate are common culprits.
  • Beverages – In particular, coffee, other caffeinated drinks, and alcohol (especially wine) can be triggers.
  • Hormonal changes – These fluctuations occur mainly in women, usually during menopause, menstruation, and pregnancy.
  • Food additives – Such substances include monosodium glutamate (MSG), aspartame, and certain dyes.
  • Stress – This includes environmental stress at home, work, or illness that puts stress on the body.
  • Sleep problems – Getting too much or not enough sleep can be problematic.
  • Sensory stimuli – Sun glare and bright lights, strong smells like secondhand smoke and perfume, and certain tactile stimulation are examples.
  • Medication – Vasodilators (nitroglycerin) and oral contraceptives can trigger migraines.
  • Physical exertion – This includes intense exercise or other physical exertion.
  • Jet lag
  • Weather changes
  • Skipping meals
  • Change in barometric pressure

Some research also shows a possible serotonin component. During a migraine attack, serotonin levels drop. Serotonin is integral to regulating pain in the nervous system.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

More and more people these days are choosing natural alternatives to medication when it comes to addressing their migraines. Chiropractic is one such drug-free alternative that gets great results for our patients.

Dr. Dawson performs spinal adjustments, particularly on the cervical spine, to alleviate migraine symptoms and prevent future episodes. These adjustments help correct body imbalances that might contribute to migraine occurrences. Additionally, he can often recommend lifestyle adjustments, dietary changes, and stress management techniques to help patients manage their triggers.
